Commonly Asked Questions about Whiplash

Whiplash is by far the most common auto accident injury that we see and treat in our office. As such, our chiropractic team has put together some answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding whiplash for your reference.

How does whiplash occur?

Whiplash most often occurs during an auto accident, but the injury can be sustained any time the upper (cervical) spine is abruptly thrown forward. In an auto accident, this usually happens when the body is thrown forward into the seatbelt, causing great strain on the upper back. As a result, muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the upper spine become strained and damaged. In some cases, the spine may also be thrown out of alignment.

What are the common symptoms of whiplash?

Usually, whiplash symptoms will not become obvious until a day or more after the accident. However, the most common whiplash symptoms include:

  • neck/back pain and stiffness
  • muscle weakness and fatigue
  • numbness or tingling feeling
  • unexplained headaches or migraines

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms following an auto accident, we recommend that you schedule an evaluation with our chiropractic team as soon as possible.

How can chiropractic care help with whiplash?

Chiropractic treatment options are ideal for whiplash patients because not only are they holistic, non-invasive, and drug-free—but they also treat your whiplash pain and symptoms directly at the source. Specifically, chiropractic treatments like spinal adjustment/manipulation can be ideal for correcting alignment problems caused during your auto accident, as well as pain that often accompanies these problems. This treatment, when combined with massage therapy and other methods, can be especially effective in relieving tension and stiffness along the upper back and spine. Corrective exercises can also work to improve range of motion and strengthen your muscles and tendons to prevent future injury.
